Mike started his tenure as President in March 2020 and has been a key member of Hughes Associates’ Civil Engineering team since 1999. Mike provides leadership to the firm, offers guidance and insight into all projects, is active in the company’s marketing and business development efforts, and is frequently engaged in the design and construction process.

Mike graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering Technology from Old Dominion University in 1988 and has worked with numerous different clients throughout his career. After graduation he worked with HSMM on civil design with clients such as the City of Virginia Beach, City of Norfolk, and NASA’s Wallops Island Flight Facility. Since moving to Roanoke with his family, Mike has remained heavily involved with our clients, such as privately owned manufacturing and healthcare clients to public entities such as VDOT and the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Mike has three daughters, making him particularly experienced in high-pressure situations.

Mike provides leadership not only to the firm but also to the community-at-large, serving as chair of the Roanoke City Board of Zoning Appeals, as a member of the Roanoke Regional Home Builders Governmental Affairs Committee, and training future entrepreneurs as a Director of Junior Achievement of Southwestern Virginia.
